What can young children actually do?
This is where honesty is worth more than enthusiasm. The Komodo standard route contains three genuinely demanding elements and a great deal of easy, rewarding water.

The Padar question
Parents ask this more than anything else. The path is stepped for much of the way but exposed, with loose sections, and it starts in the dark at around 05:00. The realistic plan for a family with children under ten is the first platform — roughly twenty to twenty-five minutes up — which already has the three-bay view. Nobody needs the upper ridge. Safety questions worth asking in writing
Ask these before you book rather than at the gangway, and keep the replies.
- Child-size life jackets: how many, and in which sizes? Adult jackets do not work on a six-year-old.
- Child-size masks and fins: carried aboard, or bring your own?
- Deck rails and stair gates: what is the arrangement on the upper deck and companionways?
- Minimum age: operator policies vary; confirm rather than assume.

Food, which is the second most common worry
A galley cooking for a fixed guest list can cook plainly for a child, but only if it knows in advance. Fussy eating, allergies and intolerances all need to be on the booking, not mentioned at the first dinner — there is no shop between Kalong and Padar. 4D3N over 3D2N, for one specific reason: the extra day is spent in the sheltered northern bays rather than on hikes and drifts. It is also the cheapest night on the card — USD 2,350 per night against USD 2,875 on a whole-boat basis. That day is the one children remember.
