On the published 2027 card, whole-boat charter overtakes buying cabins at around twelve to fourteen guests for a 3D2N. Below eight, cabins are clearly cheaper. Between eight and twelve the numbers are close enough that control of the itinerary — not price — should decide it.
Vessel data and rates on this page come from the operator’s published Magika rate card and specification sheet and were checked on 1 August 2026. Rates are reviewed annually and move with fuel, route changes and regulation. Ask for the current sheet in writing before you transfer a deposit.
The two products, stated precisely
Buying cabins on an open trip means paying a per-person rate for a berth on a departure that other people also join. Chartering means paying one price for the vessel, all nine cabins, for your dates, on your route sequence, with nobody else aboard. Both use the same boat, the same crew of six and the same 22-berth capacity.
| Package | 1–5 guests | 6–10 | 11–15 | 16–20 | Each extra guest | Per night (1–5) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2D1N | 4,700 | 5,300 | 5,800 | 6,200 | 350 | 4,700 |
| 3D2N | 5,750 | 6,450 | 7,150 | 7,750 | 400 | 2,875 |
| 4D3N | 7,050 | 7,900 | 8,900 | 9,950 | 450 | 2,350 |
| 5D4N | 8,200 | 9,600 | 11,000 | 12,350 | 450 | 2,050 |
| 6D5N | 9,600 | 11,300 | 12,800 | 13,850 | 500 | 1,920 |
| Cabin class | Per person, 3D2N | Indicative IDR at 18,000/USD |
|---|---|---|
| Master Ocean | USD 520 | ≈ IDR 9,360,000 |
| Signature Ocean | USD 490 | ≈ IDR 8,820,000 |
| Deluxe Ocean | USD 460 | ≈ IDR 8,280,000 |
| Family | USD 400 | ≈ IDR 7,200,000 |
| Superior | USD 340 | ≈ IDR 6,120,000 |
| Studio | USD 310 | ≈ IDR 5,580,000 |
The rupiah column is a conversion for orientation only, calculated at an indicative rate of IDR 18,000 per USD on 1 August 2026. The contract currency is US dollars; the rupiah figure you finally pay depends on the rate on your payment date.
The break-even table
This is the arithmetic nobody publishes, so here it is. Open-trip cabin cost is calculated by filling cabins in descending order of price — the realistic way a group actually allocates rooms — and compared against the charter band for that headcount, for a 3D2N.
| Party size | Cabins bought (approx. mix) | Open-trip total | Charter total | Cheaper option |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 1 Deluxe Ocean | USD 920 | USD 5,750 | Cabins, by a factor of six |
| 4 | 2 Deluxe Ocean | USD 1,840 | USD 5,750 | Cabins |
| 6 | 3 Deluxe Ocean | USD 2,760 | USD 6,450 | Cabins |
| 8 | Master + Signature + 2 Deluxe | USD 3,940 | USD 6,450 | Cabins |
| 10 | Master + Signature + 3 Deluxe | USD 4,860 | USD 6,450 | Cabins, narrowing |
| 12 | Above + Family | USD 6,460 | USD 7,150 | Cabins, marginal |
| 14 | Above + 1 Superior (2 pax) | USD 7,140 | USD 7,150 | Line ball — charter, effectively |
| 16 | Above + second Superior | USD 7,820 | USD 7,750 | Charter |
| 20 | All nine cabins | USD 9,220 | USD 7,750 | Charter, decisively |
Two things fall out of that table immediately.
- The crossover is around fourteen. Not eight, which is the number most people guess, and not twenty.
- Above sixteen the charter is simply better value — at twenty guests you pay USD 7,750 for the boat rather than USD 9,220 for the same twenty berths, and you gain full control of the itinerary as well.
Why would you charter below the break-even?
Because the break-even measures price and charter buys something price does not describe.
- Departure time. Open trips leave on a schedule. A charter leaves when your flight has actually landed.
- Route sequence. The order of Manta Point and Taka Makassar swaps with tide and current on any boat. On a charter, the rest of the sequence is yours: two nights at Padar if you want them, a second morning at Karang Makassar, or the entire southern run.
- Meal times. A galley serving one group can serve at 21:00. A galley serving sixteen strangers cannot.
- Nobody else. For a family reunion, a milestone birthday or a company group, this is the entire product.
What a charter does not buy is any change to the national park: entry is still IDR 250,000 per foreign visitor per visit, ranger rules still apply, and trail closures are still decided by the park rather than by the boat.
| Component | Foreign visitor | Indonesian visitor |
|---|---|---|
| Park entry, per person, per visit | IDR 250,000 flat | IDR 50,000 weekday · IDR 75,000 weekend and public holiday |
| Trekking, wildlife observation, snorkelling | Included in the figure above | Not itemised separately in the official source |
A correction worth carrying: the IDR 600,000–900,000 “Komodo entrance fee” quoted on several booking sites is not the national park ticket. It is a bundle — the statutory fee plus regional levies plus ranger and trail-management charges. The membership fee of IDR 3,750,000 floated in 2022 was cancelled and has never applied.
The longer packages change the maths again
Per-night charter cost falls steeply with duration — USD 4,700 a night at 2D1N, USD 2,875 at 3D2N, USD 2,350 at 4D3N, USD 2,050 at 5D4N and USD 1,920 at 6D5N for one to five guests. A group weighing a shorter charter against a longer open trip should compare per night, not per package. Five nights at USD 2,050 is a materially different proposition from one night at USD 4,700.
What about diving?
Diving is chartered separately and prices differently: for one to five guests in 2027, USD 11,000 for 3D2N, USD 14,600 for 4D3N and USD 18,200 for 5D4N. That is a specialist product with guides, tanks and compressor time, and it should not be compared line-for-line against a sailing charter.
| Package | 2026 | 2027 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3D2N | 9,500 | 11,000 | +15.8% |
| 4D3N | 12,650 | 14,600 | +15.4% |
| 5D4N | 15,750 | 18,200 | +15.6% |
Whole-boat pricing in full, including the party-size bands above twenty, is on whole-boat charter pricing, and the layouts we use for groups and celebrations are on group and celebration layouts. For the per-cabin view of the same decision, see the cabin-by-cabin comparison.
How to check dates and book
Bring your headcount and your dates to the first message. With those two numbers the charter-versus-cabins question answers itself in about a minute. Magika’s calendar is held by the reservations desk at Komodo Luxury, the operator that markets and charters the vessel — trading since 2015 and part of Juara Holding Group.
- WhatsApp: +62 811 3823 875 — quickest route to a live availability check or a date hold
- Email: [email protected] — better for written quotes, contracts and invoices
Ask for the rate sheet, the cabin allocation and the deposit ladder in one written message. Anything an operator will not put in writing is not a policy.
Frequently asked questions
At what group size does chartering a Komodo boat become cheaper?
Around fourteen guests on a 3D2N at the published 2027 rates. At sixteen the charter is USD 7,750 against USD 7,820 in cabins, and at twenty it is USD 7,750 against USD 9,220 — decisively cheaper, with full itinerary control included.
Is a private charter worth it for a couple?
Rarely on price. A 3D2N charter for one to five guests is USD 5,750 against USD 920 for a couple in a Deluxe Ocean cabin — a factor of six. A couple chartering is buying privacy and control, not value.
What does a private charter give you that an open trip does not?
Departure time, route sequence, meal times and exclusivity. The order of Manta Point and Taka Makassar still moves with tide on any boat, but the rest of the itinerary becomes yours to set.
Does chartering the boat change the national park rules?
No. Park entry remains IDR 250,000 per foreign visitor per visit under Government Regulation 36/2024, ranger rules on the dragon trails still apply, and any trail or site closure is decided by the park, not the operator.
Is a longer charter better value?
Substantially. Per night for one to five guests, 2D1N is USD 4,700, 3D2N USD 2,875, 4D3N USD 2,350, 5D4N USD 2,050 and 6D5N USD 1,920. Compare per night rather than per package.
How much is a private diving charter?
For one to five guests in 2027: USD 11,000 for 3D2N, USD 14,600 for 4D3N and USD 18,200 for 5D4N. Diving is a separate product with guides, tanks and compressor time, and is priced apart from sailing charters.
