How to Tell a Real Luxury Liveaboard From Its Photos: 10 Documents to Request Before You Pay

Ask for ten things: deck plan, guest capacity at full load, crew count, generator rating, fresh water capacity, cabin-by-cabin bathroom allocation, the rate sheet with year and unit stated, the deposit and cancellation policy in writing, the itinerary with overnight anchorages named, and an out-of-hours contact. An operator with a real boat sends all ten. Photographs prove nothing.
Vessel data and rates on this page come from the operator’s published Magika rate card and specification sheet and were checked on 1 August 2026. Rates are reviewed annually and move with fuel, route changes and regulation. Ask for the current sheet in writing before you transfer a deposit.
Why photographs are the weakest evidence
Every boat in Labuan Bajo photographs well. Wide lenses make cabins look larger, drone shots make hulls look longer, and sunset light flatters teak that has not been oiled in two seasons. None of that is deception exactly — it is simply that images are the one part of a listing with no verifiable content. Numbers are checkable. Pictures are not.
The ten requests
| # | Request | Why | Good answer looks like |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Deck plan | Shows cabin positions, sizes and proximity to the engine | A drawing, sent immediately |
| 2 | Maximum guest count | Cabin count means nothing without it — a 12-cabin boat can carry 35 | A single number: 22 |
| 3 | Crew count | Determines tender runs, service and galley capacity | 6, giving 1:3.7 at full load |
| 4 | Generator rating | Decides whether AC runs overnight | 30 KVA plus a 7,500 W emergency set |
| 5 | Fresh water capacity | Nine ensuite bathrooms consume water fast | 5 tonnes aboard |
| 6 | Bathroom allocation per cabin | “Ensuite” is used for at least three different arrangements | Marked on the deck plan |
| 7 | Rate sheet with unit and year | “From USD 310” is meaningless without “per person, 3D2N, Studio, 2027” | A table with bands by party size |
| 8 | Deposit and cancellation policy in writing | Anything unwritten is not a policy | 50% deposit, balance at 30 days, non-refundable — or the 30/20/50 ladder |
| 9 | Itinerary with overnight anchorages named | Where the boat sleeps decides the sunrise | Kalong on night one; Padar reached overnight |
| 10 | Out-of-hours contact | Flights to Labuan Bajo are cancelled often enough to matter | A number that answers when you test it |
What the answers look like on this boat
| Item | Figure |
|---|---|
| Length overall | 26.74 m |
| Beam | 6.03 m |
| Hull | Wooden phinisi — ironwood and balau |
| Cruising speed | 8 knots |
| Main engine | Mitsubishi 6D22 |
| Generators | 4D 30 KVA + 7,500 W emergency set |
| Fresh water | 5 tonnes |
| Cabins | 9, all ensuite |
| Maximum guests | 22 |
| Crew | 6 |
| Cabin | Number | Bed configuration | Berths | Notable feature |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Master Ocean | 1 | King + trundle | 3 | Private balcony and bathtub |
| Signature Ocean | 1 | Queen + trundle | 3 | Ocean-facing, ensuite |
| Deluxe Ocean | 3 | Queen | 6 | Ocean-facing, ensuite |
| Family | 1 | King + 2 bunks | 4 | Built for one family unit |
| Superior | 2 | 2 bunks | 4 | Compact twin-share |
| Studio | 1 | Studio layout | 2 | Entry-level ensuite |
Two details in those tables deserve attention because they are the ones most often absent elsewhere. First, the emergency generator: 7,500 W behind a 30 KVA main set means a failure at anchor is an inconvenience rather than the end of a cruise. Second, the guest cap sitting beside the cabin count — 22 guests, 9 cabins — which is the pairing that actually describes density.
Three specific red flags
1. Capacity not published
On a 1 August 2026 scan, komodoresort.com’s luxury boat page carried no price, no cabin count and no guest capacity. The only concrete figures on it were a IDR 1,000,000 drone permit and “more than 1,000 fish species”. When capacity is missing, assume it is not flattering.
2. Prices with no unit and no year
Rates are annual and they move. Our own private diving charters rose about 15% between 2026 and 2027 — the 1–5 guest 3D2N from USD 9,500 to USD 11,000. A published price without a year attached is not a price, it is an advertisement.
| Package | 2026 | 2027 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3D2N | 9,500 | 11,000 | +15.8% |
| 4D3N | 12,650 | 14,600 | +15.4% |
| 5D4N | 15,750 | 18,200 | +15.6% |
3. A park fee quoted as IDR 600,000–900,000
This one is diagnostic. An operator who describes that figure as the national park entrance fee either has not read the regulation or is repeating what everyone else says. The statutory tariff is different, and the difference matters to your budget.
| Component | Foreign visitor | Indonesian visitor |
|---|---|---|
| Park entry, per person, per visit | IDR 250,000 flat | IDR 50,000 weekday · IDR 75,000 weekend and public holiday |
| Trekking, wildlife observation, snorkelling | Included in the figure above | Not itemised separately in the official source |
A correction worth carrying: the IDR 600,000–900,000 “Komodo entrance fee” quoted on several booking sites is not the national park ticket. It is a bundle — the statutory fee plus regional levies plus ranger and trail-management charges. The membership fee of IDR 3,750,000 floated in 2022 was cancelled and has never applied.
The test that costs nothing
Send all ten requests in a single message on a weekday afternoon and time the reply. An operator running a real boat has these figures in a file and answers within hours. An operator who responds by asking for a phone call is managing a conversation rather than answering a question — and that is useful information, whatever the boat turns out to be like.
The twelve-point definition we use for luxury in this class of vessel — built specifically to be checked rather than believed — is on the twelve-point test for a luxury Komodo liveaboard, and our full published terms are on the 2027 rate, deposit and cancellation policy. For what “ensuite and air-conditioned” should actually mean, see the ensuite and AC verification guide. If children are travelling, add the safety questions in the family guide.
How to check dates and book
Ten questions, one message, one afternoon. It is the cheapest due diligence in travel. Magika’s calendar is held by the reservations desk at Komodo Luxury, the operator that markets and charters the vessel — trading since 2015 and part of Juara Holding Group.
- WhatsApp: +62 811 3823 875 — quickest route to a live availability check or a date hold
- Email: [email protected] — better for written quotes, contracts and invoices
Ask for the rate sheet, the cabin allocation and the deposit ladder in one written message. Anything an operator will not put in writing is not a policy.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check a Komodo liveaboard is genuinely luxury?
Request ten things: deck plan, maximum guest count, crew count, generator rating, fresh water capacity, bathroom allocation per cabin, a dated rate sheet with units, the written deposit and cancellation policy, the itinerary with overnight anchorages named, and an out-of-hours contact.
Why does the guest capacity matter more than the cabin count?
Because cabins can hold very different numbers of berths. A 12-cabin boat can carry 32 to 35 guests. Magika’s pairing is 9 cabins and 22 guests with 6 crew, which is what actually describes density on board.
What generator specification should I ask about?
The main set rating and whether there is a backup. Magika runs a 4D 30 KVA generator with a 7,500 W emergency set. That combination is what determines whether cabin air conditioning runs continuously overnight at anchor.
What is a red flag when booking a Komodo boat?
Three: no published guest capacity, a price with no unit and no year attached, and an operator who describes IDR 600,000–900,000 as the national park entrance fee. The statutory tariff under Government Regulation 36/2024 is IDR 250,000 per foreign visitor per visit.
How quickly should an operator answer these questions?
Within hours on a weekday. An operator running a real boat holds these figures in a file. A reply that redirects to a phone call instead of answering is managing a conversation rather than providing information.
