Safety, comfort and route judgement are not marketing claims — they are operational habits. Here is what the crew running Magika actually does differently, and how you can verify each of it before you book.
Judgement, not adjectives
The difference between a comfortable week at sea and a long one is almost always a decision made at 4 a.m.
Whether to move the boat early because the westerly is filling in. Whether tonight’s anchorage stays flat. Whether to swap Manta Point for Taka Makassar because the tide turned an hour late. Those calls are made by a captain who has run this circuit most weeks of the dry season for years, not by an itinerary printed in a brochure.

Six people, and what each of them does
Six crew for up to 22 guests is a ratio of 1:3.7 at full load, and about 1:2.7 on a typical 16-guest private charter.
Captain
Route, tide and weather calls. Anchoring in the dark at Kalong or Siaba is routine, not improvised — GPS navigation is on the published specification.
Engineer
A Mitsubishi 6D22 main engine, a 30 KVA generator and an emergency set rated 7,500. Redundancy is the reason a failed genset does not mean a hot, dark night.
Galley
Full board on every package, provisioned ashore in Labuan Bajo before departure. There is no resupply at sea, which is why diets are confirmed at booking.
Dive and snorkel guides
A guide is included on every published package; a dive guide on every diving package, with up to three dives daily and tanks and weights supplied.
Deck crew
Tender transfers to Padar, Komodo, Rinca and Pink Beach — there are no jetties at most stops — plus life vests for drift snorkelling.

Safety is a list, not a promise
An operator that takes safety seriously can send you the equipment list. Here is ours, straight from the vessel specification.

Knowing the ground you sail
Komodo National Park is about 1,817 square kilometres of land and sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991, with more than 1,000 reef fish species and over 250 coral species.
Park entry under PP 36/2024 is IDR 250,000 per foreign visitor per visit, and IDR 50,000 on weekdays or IDR 75,000 on weekends and public holidays for Indonesian visitors. It is collected separately from the charter and funds conservation. We work to reef-safe practice on every departure: no contact with coral, no anchoring on reef, and a water dispenser on board so bottles get refilled rather than binned.
How to verify all of it
- Ask for the cabin list with bathroom status per cabin — ours reads 9 of 9 en-suite.
- Divide crew by maximum guests. Ours is 6 ÷ 22 = 1:3.7.
- Ask for the safety equipment list in writing.
- Ask what the price excludes. Park fees, alcohol, drone permits and gratuities always should be on that list.

What should I expect on a Magika Liveaboard trip?
A guided Komodo circuit from Labuan Bajo with full board, an en-suite air-conditioned cabin, and a route adjusted daily for tide and wind. Sailing packages include a guide, snorkelling gear and life vests; diving packages add up to three guided dives a day with tanks and weights.
How experienced is the crew?

What happens if the weather turns?
The captain changes the plan, and should. December to March carries the highest cancellation risk in Komodo. Carry travel insurance and discuss the operator’s rescheduling practice in writing before you pay.
